The Edexcel GCSE in Arabic is the qualification pupils will be aiming for, and it consists of four units based on the following skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Unit 1: Listening and Understanding in Arabic
- Externally assessed
- 23% of the total GCSE
- This unit draws on vocabulary and structures from across the four specified common topic areas: Out and about, customer service and transactions, personal information, future plans and work.
- Pupils will be tested on their ability to understand spoken Arabic.
Unit 2: Speaking in Arabic
- Externally assessed
- 27% of the total GCSE
- The focus of the speaking unit will relate to the following themes: media, travel and culture or sport, leisure and work.
- Pupils will learn how to demonstrate an ability to use the language for different purposes and in different settings.
Unit 3: Reading and Understanding in Arabic
- Externally assessed
- 23% of the total GCSE
- This unit draws on vocabulary and structures from across the four specified common topic areas and consists of a number of short texts, notices or short news reports in Arabic which includes a range of settings and styles both formal and informal. For example text messages, advertisements and emails.
- Pupils will be tested on their ability to understand written Arabic.
Unit 4: Writing in Arabic
- Externally assessed
- 27% of the total GCSE
- Pupils will learn how to write in response to a choice of questions that relate to the prescribed themes of this specification: media, travel and culture or sport, leisure and work.
- Pupils are encouraged to write for effective communication and knowledge and application of language as well as accuracy.
